International Women’s Day Celebration at the Heller School

The 100th Annual International Women’s Day is fast approaching- March 8th!. International Women’s Day is a day that women and men of all ages, races, ethnicities, national backgrounds, sexual/relationship orientations, classes, spiritual paths, etc. unite to celebrate women’s hard won accomplishments and to acknowledge the path left ahead of us to traverse towards equity.

For this reason we would like to invite you to the Heller School Gender Working Group’s Celebration:

                                                         Women Changing Our World
100th Annual International Women’s Day Celebration
                                                           Monday, March 8, 2010
                                                                      12noon-3pm
                                                      Zinner Forum Heller School

To celebrate “Women Changing Our World” we are inviting you to participate; the main events will include:

 ** Collaborative Art Activity/Exhibit **
If you would like to celebrate a woman that you know who is changing or has changed our world we invite you to bring a photo (printed from the computer or an actual small photo) of a woman you would like to celebrate. We will have a space dedicated to creating small collages to celebrate the women attendees have chosen to celebrate. We will provide everyone with construction paper and all the materials you’d need to make a collage. You can bring a photo if you’d like. If you have no photo available of the woman you’d like to honor you can still create a collage with words and art supplies. The collages will be displayed in the Zinner Forum. For more information contact Alyxe Lett at alyxe@brandeis.edu

 ** Open Mic **
A main component of the celebration will be dedicated to an open mic/performance space for attendees who would like to share poetry, dance, song or just their thoughts on particular women’s stories, representations of women’s struggles, and/or celebration of women’s accomplishments. Attendees can share the works of their favorite authors or original pieces. If you are interested in performing there will be a sign up sheet on the bulletin board outside of the Zinner Forum later this week.

We ask that everyone who purchased an International Women’s Day Celebration T-Shirt to please wear it to the celebration! If you would like to participate or simply come and share in the spirit of celbration we invite you to attend! If you have any questions or would like to help during the celebration you can contact Shayla Livingston at living@brandeis.edu.

 See you there!

“A Crime So Monstrous,” E. Benjamin Skinner, journalist (Co-sponsored by the Gender Working Group)
Monday, February 22, 2010, 7:00 p.m.
TO BE CONFIRMED: Rapaporte Treasure Hall, Goldfarb Library

E. Benjamin Skinner, author of E. Benjamin Skinner has the dubious honor of having seen the purchase of human beings on four continents. Skinner, a senior fellow at the Schuster Institute, will discuss his award-winning book, “A Crime So Monstrous: Face-to-Face With Modern-Day Slavery,” which details his journeys through such countries as Romania, India, Haiti, and Sudan, and his quest to expose the horrors of modern-day slavery, still all too prevalent today.

“Rigorously investigated and fearlessly reported, A Crime So Monstrous is a passionate and thorough examination of the appalling reality of human bondage in today’s world…. The abuses detailed in these pages are repugnant, but there is hope to be found: by giving voice to the victims, Skinner helps restore their dignity and makes crucial strides toward closing this shameful chapter in history.”
—Bill Clinton

Skinner will also speak about his personal journey, and how he came to follow a path of journalism, social justice, and human rights..
